How to learn vocabulary better with gestures

With gestures and movement, you simply remember vocabulary better! We explain why this is the case here.
14.1.2025

Most students learn with a vocabulary book or with index cards. It works, but it's not particularly effective. In the CABUU app, you therefore learn with gestures, a demonstrably better and faster way to learn vocabulary.

From research to everyday learning

Linguistic research in recent years has shown that learning vocabulary with gestures works much better than just with text or images. This was proven in experiments: Test participants learned vocabulary in various ways, some using only text (such as with conventional index cards or a vocabulary book), others with pictures (as in some books and apps) or by making a gesture appropriate to the word (e.g. to “drink” - bring a glass to their mouth).

The results were always clear: The test participants were better able to remember the vocabulary they made a movement to than those learned with text or pictures.

Do it yourself and remember better

The reason for this is because of the so-called “Enactment effect” to do. It sounds complicated, but everyone of us is familiar with the principle: Activities that you have carried out yourself are remembered better than those that you have only observed. A new and much-discussed line of research that can be used to explain this effect has become known as “Motor Cognition.”

Thinking and movement: hand in hand

“Motor Cognition” is based on the idea that all cognitive abilities (i.e. those that affect perception and thinking) are closely linked to the motor apparatus (i.e. the brain regions for movement planning and control).

As part of this research, it was possible to show that when verbs such as “kick” or “throw” are understood, those areas of the brain that are actually responsible for planning and carrying out the corresponding actions are also active.

From research to the app

The cabuu app uses exactly these links to anchor vocabulary in the brain: In the cabuu app, learning robot Bo shows you a suitable finger gesture for every word. After you make the small gesture on the touchscreen, an animation is played. It's fun and at the same time the Super powers of gestural learning activated - The words are proven to be remembered better and longer.
